Irma: Where it is and what we know Sixteen years ago Monday, on one of the darkest days in U.S. history, travelers trying to return home to America or visit here from other countries were re-routed to a small Canadian town on an island in the North Atlantic Ocean. Thirty-eight planes, nearly 6,700 travelers, were stranded. While they were at a loss of what to do, where to go and how to get essentials from their inaccessible luggage, the travelers found something else: A town full of overwhelming hospitality. Here's the heart-warming story of Gander, Newfoundland.

Weier, 12 at the time of the 2014 attack, told detectives they were trying to appease Slender Man, a mythical creature they thought would kill them. Weier's lawyers will argue that she was suffering from a mental disease. If they succeed, Weier would be found not legally responsible for her crime and committed to a state mental hospital for at least three years.Sean Spicer made a name for himself during his brief stint as White House press secretary, a role in which he made false claims about the size of President Trump's inauguration crowds and insisted that the word "covfefe" has a meaning. On Monday, Spicer will start cashing in on that name as a paid speaker, Politico reported, with his first gig at investment bank Rodman & Renshaw's annual conference. The NFL's opening week features a Monday Night Football doubleheader. In the opener, the Vikings host the Saints in Adrian Peterson's return to Minnesota. While Peterson gets a fresh start in New Orleans, Vikings fans will have to get used to the seven-time Pro Bowl running back wearing the colors of the opposing team. The nightcap between the Chargers and Broncos in Denver is notable for a number of reasons. It will be a debut for two head coaches, the Chargers' Anthony Lynn and the Broncos' Vance Joseph. The game is also the Chargers' first as a Los Angeles-based franchise since the team's inaugural season in 1960. To top it all off the Chargers' Antonio Gates is a touchdown catch away from becoming the NFL's all-time leader among tight ends.
