5 things you need to know this weekend

Weekend weather conditions could mean more fires in California

Firefighters face another devastating round of the low humidity, dry foliage and strong weekend wind gusts as they battle more than 20 blazes in the deadliest week of wildfires in California history. Red Flag Warnings, forecasting dangerous fire conditions, are in effect for much of Northern California as well as a stretch from near Santa Barbara to north of Los Angeles. At least 35 people have died and more than 9,000 firefighters are now tackling the wildfires that has devastated the state’s famed wine country. In just two days, the fires have produced as much pollution as all the vehicles in the state produce in a year. Here's what could happen next for Harvey Weinstein

Fallout from sexual assault allegations against Harvey Weinstein has been swift; The Weinstein Company cut ties with the embattled company co-founder; celebrities and politicians have condemned the movie mogul; his wife is leaving him. And the reverberations are likely to continue: The board of governors for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will review Weinstein’s membership during an emergency meeting Saturday. An Academy statement called Weinstein’s alleged actions “repugnant, abhorrent and antithetical” to the group which organizes the Oscars.
Twitter temporarily locked Rose McGowan's account over tweets about Harvey Weinstein. After pushback from fellow celebrities and other Twitter users, the company unlocked her account and vowed more transparency going forward. Wochit

Apollo 11 capsule takes national tour

One of the most iconic objects in human history — the spacecraft that carried the first men to walk on the moon in 1969 — is going on a road trip. The command module Columbia, part of the Apollo 11 mission, will star in a two-year national tour celebrating the 50th anniversary of the historic voyage. The tour begins Saturday in Houston before it travels to St. Louis, Pittsburgh and Seattle. The module was the main living area for Michael Collins, Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong, as they went to the moon and back.

Medicare open enrollment begins Sunday

Health care open enrollment season is upon us. It’s that time of year where most Americans will take a look at their insurance options and make decisions about their health care coverage for next year. For many, that will happen in November with their employer — but for older and disabled Americans with Medicare coverage, that process begins now. The annual Medicare open enrollment period starts Sunday, Oct. 15 and runs until Thursday, Dec. 7. Beneficiaries have a little more than 7 weeks to decide if they want to stick with their current plan, make changes or switch to other medical and prescription drug plans.

MLB playoffs: Two rounds later, only four teams remain

It’s a big weekend for baseball fans as a place for this year's World Series intensifies. The Houston Astros and New York Yankees get the ball rolling Saturday (live, 4 p.m. ET) after Dallas Keuchel silenced the young Bronx Bombers with a masterclass performance in Game 1. Later in the night, the Los Angeles Dodgers look for revenge when they host the Chicago Cubs (live, 8 p.m. ET) in Game 1 of the NLCS. It’s a quick turnaround for Chicago, who faces Los Angeles ace Clayton Kershaw, following a memorable Game 5 NLDS classic against the Washington Nationals.
